Wellness travel, verified in person

The world's healing places, tested in person.

Four years, 162 countries and all seven continents into a nonstop trip around the world — I've soaked, steamed, scrubbed and fasted through more of the planet's great spas than almost anyone — including twelve of the twenty best on earth. Solace is where the receipts live.

Why this site exists

At some point, the body files a complaint.

Movement is my default setting. Since March 2022 I've lived out of two carry-on bags — 428 flights, a million steps' worth of wandering, seven continents. And at some point the body files a complaint, and the complaint always reads the same way: sit down. Get in the water.

So I went looking for the water. Not a hot tub with a eucalyptus dispenser — the real thing. The clinics where doctors take your blood before breakfast. The thermal temples older than the countries around them. The ashram on a maharaja's estate. The bathhouses where a stranger scrubs you like a rug and you thank them for it.

Everything here comes from going in person. When I haven't been, I say so — those entries are marked on deck, and they're the trips I'm planning next.

The flagship list

The twenty best spas on earth, ranked.

Not a vibe — an aggregate. I merged every list that matters (the award bodies, the readers' polls, the editors' pilgrimages) into one master ranking, then went and took the waters myself — and built a world directory of 67 wellness destinations around it, each with its own page. Three from the twenty:

The courtyard spa atrium at Royal Mansour, Marrakech
№ 15 · Marrakech, Morocco

Royal Mansour Spa

The royal hammam ritual against which all others get scrubbed — and the most beautiful room I've ever stood in wearing a robe.

Jungle pavilions at COMO Shambhala Estate, Bali
№ 10 · Ubud, Bali

COMO Shambhala Estate

Five nights in the Ayung River jungle — my first real retreat, and the one that started this whole obsession.

The palace estate of Ananda in the Himalayas above the Ganges
№ 6 · Rishikesh, India

Ananda in the Himalayas

Ayurveda on a maharaja's estate a thousand feet over the Ganges — sunrise yoga, khichdi at noon, and a level of calm that felt frankly unearned.

Somewhere to Be Still

Zoom out far enough and every itinerary I've ever written ends the same way: looking for somewhere to be still.

What a Detox Week Is Actually Like

I've done the juice fast in the desert and the khichdi above the Ganges. Here's what a "detox" really does — and doesn't.

678 flights taught me that the first 24 hours after landing are part of the trip. My arrival ritual, spa included.

About Solace

Authority you can only earn with a passport.

In 2022 I put everything into storage and started traveling — and never stopped. Somewhere between the seven continents and the 385 hotel stays, the world's healing traditions became the thread that tied it all together.
