The one behind Solace.
After years of working hard with little time to travel, my partner and I put everything into storage in March of 2022. We haven't stopped since. When the journey began, I hadn't left the country in almost ten years; today the count reads 162 countries, all seven continents, and 385 hotel stays — from nearly every Aman, Belmond and Four Seasons on the map to −30° yurts, night trains, and airport floors.
Somewhere in there, the world's healing traditions became the thread that tied it all together. Movement is my default setting — pilgrimages walked across two continents, a million steps' worth of wandering — and at some point the body files a complaint. The complaint always reads the same way: sit down, get in the water. So I made the water my beat: the onsen towns, the bath palaces, the hammams, the ashrams, the longevity clinics. Solace is where I write down what I've learned — so your next reset is booked on evidence, not vibes.
How the ranking works.
Authority means showing your work. The Solace ranking of the twenty best spas on earth is an aggregate, not a vibe:
- Merge every list that matters. The World Spa Awards, Travel + Leisure's World's Best, Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice and Spa Guides, Forbes five-stars, Tatler, the Sunday Times Top 50, Vogue, Destination Deluxe, the World's 50 Best Wellness Resorts, the longevity-clinic rankings — dozens of publications across award editions from 2023 to 2026.
- Citations win arguments. More independent citations, higher seat. Category icons hold their chairs — there is exactly one Zumthor bath temple. Where the lists tie, I break it the only way I know how: which one would I fly for tomorrow?
- Then I go. VISITED means through the doors, dates from my own travel ledger — twelve of the twenty so far. The rest are marked ON DECK, because pretending you've been somewhere is the one treatment I'll never book.
- Programs come from the source. Every entry lists the property's actual named programs, verified against its own published menu — not paraphrased marketing.
One recusal for honesty's sake: I adore Amangiri too much to rank it fairly, so it sits out. The bench arguing for a seat — Chenot, Lanserhof's sister houses, Bürgenstock's cantilevered infinity edge, Gora Kadan's perfect onsen — gets relitigated every season.
